There is an internal pressure to maintain our self-image and to behave in a way that is consistent with our beliefs. We find whatever way we can to avoid contradicting who we have decided to be. Who we have agreed we need to be. We find thoughts and ideas that we like and tie those into our identity. Unfortunately, the more deeply a thought or action is tied to your identity, the more difficult it is to change. The more difficult it is to realize that we need to change. It can feel comfortable to believe what your culture believes, or to do what you believe upholds your own self-image, even if it’s wrong.
